A talent for identifying terroir
Maison La Porte is a leading Sancerre winemaker, established in 1850. The terroir of Sancerre is very complex, due to the mille-feuille-like layers of the earth's crust that were formed during the prehistoric age. The Sancerre vineyard of Silex is now renowned as one of the best in Sancerre, but it used to be shunned by winemakers because of its stony topsoil.
Laporte, which has long made wine from such lands, took on a new challenge in 2002: Marlborough, New Zealand, just behind France. The company bought an untouched piece of land and cleared it as a vineyard. The wine has a lovely red fruit fruitiness with a sweet black fruitiness, and the complexity and tannins expressed from the oak are well balanced and "right on". The reason for this taste is their greatest weapon: their ability to discern terroir. This is a wine where you can feel the splendor of "living" in the region.
